A musical search engine

If I knew how, I’d invent a musical search engine. Not an empee3 finder or whatever, but a search engine in which key words would be replaced by key notes. Let’s say that one day you find your self whistling a tune, but you can’t remeber what it is. Or, you hear music on the radio, maybe something not easily recognizable, a jazz or a classical piece, and you want to find out the name of the composer, but you don’t have anything to start your search with but a bit of music in your head. Or you are a composer and you thought of a great piece to compose, but you want to make sure that no one wrote it before you (if it happened to Debussy who wrote Ravel’s Habanera all over again, it may happen to you). What do you do?

Well, you go the musical search engine, and you type in the notes you can remember. They don’t have to be the exact same notes (which would be impossible if you don’t have a perfect pitch), but rather the same intervals, or similar ones. If you don’t know your notes, well, you should be able to just whistle or hum the tune into the computer’s mike, or get your radio closer to it, if it’s the symphony you want to identify. It isn’t hard to convert the .wav file into some kind of score, there is already software for this on the market. Then the musical search engine would return the closest matches and voilà!

I really wonder why nobody ever thought about it before. The reason I wrote this article in my rather shaky English, is because I hope someone picks up my idea and makes it happen. And give me all the credit and some royalties, of course. Then I’ll be a millionaire and buy my own domain, or a car maybe.

  2. Foarte interesant. Am fredonat sonata in do major pt flaut şi continuo de Bach, şi mi-a zis că e de fapt What’s love got to do, de Tina Turner.

  3. Genial! A recunoscut valsul Dunărea Albastră 🙂

In fond, cine fredoneaza muzica clasica in principiu stie ce fredoneaza; cel putin voi doi stiti.

  7. Mr.Stroescu, happy hummering! for the time when they’ll give you credit for this idea! Oh, and happy classy whistling too!

E chiar lucru rar, medice! Tre’ să bem, cum ziceam 😀
